Great Salsas by the Boss of Sauce: From the Southwest & Points Beyond Southeast Asia
Published in Paperback by Crossing Press (March, 1997)
Authors: W. C. Longacre and Dave Dewitt
Average review score:

Chiles and Salsa - GREAT BOOK!
Every salsa in this book contains chiles (New Mexican approved spelling ) from the hottest of tiny chiltepins, to the bland but pleasing familiar green bell. Salsa in Mexico means sauce and applies to both cooked and uncooked preparations. Now that salsa has surpassed ketchup as the nation's most popular condiment, this book rushes in to teach us how to concoct them all, from true Mexican, to New Mexican to Tex-Mex to tropical. Consider apple-citrus salsa for seafood, apricot ginger red chile salsa for roast pork, pickled cactus and tequila salsa for chips.

The Great Southwest Nature Factbook: A Guide to the Region's Remarkable Animals, Plants, and Natural Features
Published in Paperback by Alaska Northwest Books (October, 1992)
Author: Susan J. Tweit
Average review score:

Full of interesting facts about the southwest
This was an interesting and well-written book. I'm sorry to see that it's out of print. It contains a lot of interesting information on the desert's plans, animals, and geology. It appeared to be very well researched. and the author seemed to have a great appreciation for this unique part of the country. If you are interested in the desert I would recommend that you try to find a copy of this book.

Guide to Climbing and Hiking in Southwestern British Columbia
Published in Paperback by Gordon Soules Book Pub (September, 1986)
Author: Bruce Fairley
Average review score:

The classic, exhaustive, Mountaineering Guide to the region
The descriptions in this exhaustive guide are brief, but excellent. It covers the terrain within a long weekend's outing from Vancouver. It assumes that you know what you are doing and do not require trails to walk on. If you can navigate through the bush using a topo map, compass, and altimeter, then this is the best book for you. For more detailed info on hikes with trails, use the book "103 Hikes".

This book is an exhaustive, complete list of pretty much every summit in the region. It covers approaches and routes in a summary-type fashion, e.g. "follow west side of creek to 3000 ft., then follow NE ridge, keeping to the left of conspicuous gendarme. Some parties may wish to rope up for the final 500 ft., which is class 3". It doesn't hold your hand, but the advice is good, and if you are experienced (or corageous!) then this is more than enough info.

There are detailed descriptions for climbing and mountaineering routes. For popular climbing areas and peaks, i.e. the Tantalus Range, Sky Pilot, etc. there are photos with the routes marked on them.

Heart's Desire
Published in Hardcover by Random House (May, 1986)
Author: Gwyneth Cravens
Average review score:

One of the best books I have ever read....and re-read....
I found this book in a used book store several years ago and have been searching for other books by Gwyneth Cravens ever since. "Hearts Desire" takes place in New Mexico during the early 1960's. The main characters are women: a mother, a daughter, and a daughter-in-law who become involved as they go through death (of a father), the draft (of a brother), and desertion (of a husband and son). All three women tend to try and see things in the best possible light (despite reality) but gradually are forced through circumstances to see life as it is, and therefore be at peace with themselves and each other. Gwyneth Cravens portrays the Western landscape in words that make one feel as if one has already been there (I know because I read this book before I ever visited New Mexico). This book should not be out of print - get it if you can find it, and read it - it is wonderful

Hearts and Flours Cookbook: A Sampler of Recipes from the Heart of Texas
Published in Hardcover by Wimmer Companies, Inc. (December, 1988)
Author: Junior League
Average review score:

Great recipes from the Heart of Texas
I bought this cookbook in 1986 when the Junior League of Waco first released it. I loaned it to a friend -- and never got it back. I wasn't mad at her...I totally understood! I'd have kept it, too!

I have made many of the recipes in this book, and I can attest to the fact that none of them have ever turned out poorly. I can highly recommend the sour cream chicken enchiladas and the sangria. My family requests those every holiday instead of turkey. I was so happy to purchase another of these books because they were never released again after the first printing. If you can find a copy don't think -- just buy! You'll be glad you have this in your cookbook library. I am so glad it's back in mine.

Here Is the Southwestern Desert
Published in Library Binding by Hyperion Press (April, 1995)
Authors: Madeleine Dunphy and Anne Coe
Average review score:

Marvelous book for a child
I just loved Here is the Southwestern Desert, but what's more important is that my twenty-one month old daughter can't get enough of it. We read it to her at least once a day, because if we don't she protests quite audibly. The story is simple and insightful, and the art is just amazing. There are so many things that she picks out of each painting. She loves the animals and flowers. All the desert flora and fauna in the book are represented in a way that she can truly enjoy.

A History of the Sweetness of the World (The Texas Review Southern and Southwestern Poets Breakthrough Series)
Published in Hardcover by Sam Houston State Univ (January, 1998)
Author: Michael Lieberman
Average review score:

A Collection of Rich, Vital Poems
In his first full length collection, Michael Lieberman has produced a volume of sweeping breadth. His pages are populated by poems that explore faith, death, identity (especially Jewishness), and the nature of human existence. Each poem is both lament and celebration of life and love and loss. Poems like "Hobart Street" touch the reader with images human frailty and desire. Other poems such as "Loss," "Without Allusion," and "Extraction" are virtually prayers. Amazing line follows amazing line as Lieberman shapes the words into verse that writhes with life. Though occasionally the medical and scientific terminology (Lieberman is also a research pathologist) can be challenging for the layman, it added a rich texture to the copious detail. These poems are proof that Michael Lieberman is paying attention to the wonder of existence. It is a book I am glad to own.

Just like Grandmother used to make...
This is a GREAT recipe book. Not only are the instructions clear enough that anybody can follow, but the recipes are actually like the traditional food you find in the homes on the reservation.
